What to Study

We aim to nurture creators with techniques and knowledge about interior and furniture, who are able to design as well.

As construction materials, techniques and design have been diversified these days, the field of construction is now requiring talents with a wide range of knowledge about design and technology who can equally communicate with architects and designers as well as exactly grasp what clients need.

In Interior Meister major, students learn almost all the skills necessary for interior work from making furniture to how to install carpets. During the 2 years, they are expected not only to master relevant skills but also to add creativity to their work. Besides, there is a unique strength Interior Meisters have; they can read what designers intend precisely as they have a full set of knowledge about design unlike conventional interior constructors.

Destroy the frame between jobs and work from A to Z; they are in an increasing demand in remodel or renovation specialist with their competence and versatility.

How to Learn

Understand the basics, think sufficiently and go for it.

Our curriculum is practice-centered. Students learn how to make interior facilities and furniture by first hand experience as well as study of the theory, interior drawing, coloring and interior coordination.

Students learn processing techniques through learning the Basics of interior design and making furniture by practice. Through this, they are expected to realize how important precision is when processing materials while making life-size chairs. In addition, students are requested to put together a room to practice interior work. In here, they learn the structure and characteristics of a timber house and its facilities.

In addition, students visit design spots as well as learn interior coordination, color practice, CAD, how to make presentations in order to catch what designers and architects intend precisely.

We are also running programs including internship opportunities, management, industry-academia cooperation and the project work for graduation in order to build each student's potential and individuality.

Interior Meisters (Versatile specialists)
Interior Meisters are versatile specialists who are able to handle various works from those requiring special know-how such as piping to interior facilities, furniture and supervision.

※Versatile specialists/As the name says, they are specialists in a wide range of fields. Now that construction materials and laws have been diversified these days, they are in an increasing demand. Since there was no system like this in the conventional apprenticeship, graduates from ICS's Interior Meister major are expected to be in a great demand.

Work field after graduation

After graduation, students can work in various fields as a Interior Meister with high executive ability as well as a full set of design and technique knowledge.

As a site supervisor
Site supervisors supervise and direct construction.
As an interior/facility constructor
Interior/facility constructors handle interior work and construction based on a blueprint.
As a self-builder
In this context, self-building means to build constructions just in the point of view of the builder.
As a carpenter
Carpenters mainly work on constructing and reforming wooden buildings.
As a furniture upholsterer
Furniture upholsters produce furniture using timber and metal.
As a joiner
Joiners produces shoji, Japanese Sliding Door Fittings; they are also asked to produce furniture.
As a paper hanger
Paper hangers paper rooms.
As a repair craftsman
Repair craftsmen repair interior facilities or furniture.
As an interior construction planner
Interior/construction planners plan and supervise interior construction and reform works.
As a building mechanical engineer
Building mechanical engineers plan and supervise construction with relevant knowledge.
As a Construction Quantity Surveyor
Construction Quantity Surveyors calculate the expense a certain construction project will cost with relevant knowledge, based on the blueprint and specification.

Detailed Course Description

Interior construction practice
Students are requested to make a room in the studio (a booth for interior construction practice) and work by themselves from installing windows, doors and lighting to papering or painting the room. Via this practice, they are expected to learn interior expertise as well as technical skills.
Furniture making practice
Students are requested to make various furniture from simple tables and chairs to custom-built furniture.
Design expression techniques
Students learn how to design renovations, furniture, etc and develop presentation techniques through CAD drawing, color practice and interior coordination.
Internship
Students can job shadow at companies they choose several times over 4 weeks in the spring semester of the second grade and have an internship opportunity for 3 weeks in the field where they have determined to get a job in the fall semester of the same year.

Construction knowledge/special lectures
Through lectures, students learn knowledge about construction. Plus, special lectures are held about 10 times a week by eminent professional designers and architects.

Qualification

Diploma
When students graduate, they receive Diploma from the Ministry of Education.
※ICS is a vocational school permitted by Enforcement Regulations for the School Education Law. Graduates that studied for 2 years or more are treated as a ordinary college graduate when applying for jobs at private companies as well as civil service jobs, according to No.326 of the Rule of the National Personnel Authority in Japan.
A teachers' license for vocational schools
By taking lessons Association for technical and career education hosts, students can receive a teacher's license for vocational schools.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a registered architect of the second class ※A national qualification
Students are entitled to take the exam with 2 year of hands-on-background after they graduate.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a registered architect of wooden houses ※A national qualification
Students are entitled to take the exam with 2 years of hands-on-background after they graduate.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a First-Class building operation and management engineer ※A national qualification
Students are entitled to take the exam with 5 years of hands-on-background (including 1 year as a directing role) after they graduate.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a Second-Class building operation and management engineer ※A national qualification
Students are entitled to take the written exam with a reasonable assumption to graduate the school. Those who passed the written exam are entitled to take the practical exam with 2 years of hands-on-background after they graduate.
※There are independent exams for each of the three types of qualifications in Second-Class building operation and management engineer: atchitecture, skeleton, and finish.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a DIY adviser
Students are entitled to take the exam during their school years.
※Those in Interior Meister major are exempt from the performance test.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a commercial facility engineer
Students older than 20 can take the exam during their school years. Once they pass it, they are entitled to take the performance test after achieving 1 year of hands-on-background.
Vectorworks (CAD) skill acquisition basic course completion certification
ICS students who studied for 1 years or more can receive this qualification through application.
The entitlement to take an exam to be an interior planner
Students older than 20 can take the test during their school years. Once they pass it, they can take performance test by achieving 2 years of hands-on-background.
The entitlement to take an exam to be an interior coordinator
Students can take the test during their school years without any requirement.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a housing environment coordinator
Students can take the test during their school years without any requirement.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a kitchen specialist
Students can take the test during their school years without any requirement.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a lighting consultant
Students can take the test during their school years without any requirement.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a color coordinator
Students can take the test during their school years without any requirement.
The entitlement to take an exam to be a lifestyle planner
Students can take the test during their school years without any requirement.
